Hedwig Process Pics

Modeling paste and acrylic paint on canvas.

After my 11th grade art teacher forced me to use modeling paste on a project that I thought looked better without it, I wanted to figure out a way to make something of my own using the difficult medium, I wanted to conquer it. I had studied the work of Koby Feldmos and thought I’d try something like his pieces. Although he used oil paint on canvas, I wanted more dimension, so I mixed modeling paste and acrylic paint. I didn’t have a palette knife like Koby Feldmos used, so I tried to apply the medium using a piping bag. It did not keep it’s shape as I had intended, so I abandoned that method and realized that a plastic knife more than sufficed as it gave me more control over the direction of the medium as well as blending colors. I sculpted the feathers out of the modeling paste as I applied it to the canvas, adding small amounts of black to certain areas to create shadows and depth. I chose to do a portrait of Hedwig simply because I wanted to have a Harry Potter-inspired piece. Modeling paste cures in the shape that you apply it, therefore, it will forever hold the creamy texture while remaining solid to the touch.
