Paint chip samples on canvas.

Challenging myself to see what I could make out of unconventional materials while not spending money, I remembered how I used to collect and hoard paint chip samples from Home Depot when I was little. I thought about creating a simple scene using this medium which would allow me to not have to worry about mixing the right colors or smearing paint. I wanted to see the difference this medium would make, so I took a geometric acrylic painting of a hedgehog I already did and decided to recreate it with these paint chip samples. So, I raided the paint wall at Home Depot with every color and shade that I needed. Keep in mind I had to get all of my colors then because if I didn’t have one I needed, I couldn’t just make it using what I had like you could with paint. After I gridded my scene, I cut and layered the paint chip samples starting from the top of the background and working my way forward. Then, I added the pebbles and blades of grass as well as flowers to add some color. I used darker shades of green in the back to create depth and layered light colored grass on top so the grass would stand out and then I switched it as I moved towards the front. For the hedgehog, I did his bottom half first and then cut out many small triangles to layer his back. Lastly, I added his ears and his visible eye. I made sure to make the color and code of the paint chip samples visible in this piece to add some whimsey. Up close, you can see how each cut piece is layered.
